The American Red Cross, as the National Red Cross Society of the United States, is a member of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The American Red Cross was founded in 1881 and incorporated by Act of Congress in 1905.
The American Red Cross of Northern New York, one of 775 chapters in the United States, was founded in 1917 as the Jefferson County Chapter. In 1987 the Jefferson County Chapter merged with the Lewis County Chapter to form the Black River Valley Chapter. In 2003 came another name change to The American Red Cross of Northern New York and an expansion of its service delivery area to St. Lawrence County. Under the terms of its charter, the chapter is responsible for carrying out the humanitarian mission of the American Red Cross. |
